Don O’Neal "Breaks the Ice" in Brownstown Speedway Season Opener

BROWNSTOWN, IN – March 27 – Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN picked up his 21ST career Late Model feature win Saturday night at Brownstown Speedway in the Northern All-Star Late Model 2nd annual "Indiana Icebreaker". Also on the program were Street Stock and Bombers that saw Tim Clark score the Street Stock win and Robbie Wilson garner top honors for the Bomber division. A total of 120 race cars were present for the season opener.

The Northern All-Star Late Model Series Sanctioned event saw 64 cars representing six states on hand for the 30 lap, $2,000.00 to win event. Don O’Neal and Steve Barnett brought the feature grid to the green flag with O’Neal taking command immediately on the start. Rob Toland settled into second and held it until lap four when Barnett took the spot and held it until lap six when Dion Deason shot beneath Barnett to take second. The first caution of the event flew for a spin on lap seven. On the restart, O’Neal again pulled away with Dion Deason in tow. Disaster struck Barnett on lap 9 when his car hooked a rut in turn four, causing his entry to spin sideways and defending NALMS series champion Jeff Wilson clipped the front of Barnett's car, ending both drivers night early. The event would be slowed again by caution three more times with the last being a spin by Delane Browning after he and John Gill were racing for the sixth position. At this point, O’Neal continued to hold the top spot after the restart with Deason second and Jim Curry had worked his way up to third, while John Gill had began to move forward from his tenth starting position. The final laps had O’Neal showing the way with Deason and Curry battling for the runner-up spot. O’Neal drove his O’Neal Timber and Veneer/C.J. Rayburn Race Cars #71 to the checkered flag first followed by Deason and Curry. Defending Late Model track champion Marty O’Neal had a strong run to finish in the fourth spot, while Scott James nipped Gill at the finish for fifth. Ernie Barrow, Kevin Claycomb, Bobby Carrier, Jr., and Toland completed the top ten. The six heat race victories went to Don O’Neal, Toland, Curry, Marty O’Neal, Deason, and Barnett. Greg Johnson and Steven Godsey scored the Consy wins.

In Street Stock action, Tim Clark of North Vernon, IN began defense of his track championship by scoring the feature win for the division behind the wheel of his Majestic Electric #1. Joe Johnson, Rusty Smiley, Steve Hunt, and Jerry Adams finished second through fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Eddie Kindred, Chris DeWeese, Mel Bigham, J.D. Roberts, and Jason Hehman. Heat wins went to Hunt, Clark, and Johnson.

Robbie Wilson of North Vernon, IN took over the lead with two laps to go and drove his #W1 to the Bomber division feature victory. Late race leader Tim Prince came home second, with Jeff Helton, Matt Bex, and Sam Chastain rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Terry Leitzman, Kurt Wagner, Consy winner Frankie Warren, Matt Cummings, and Nate Wentworth. Chastain, Wilson, Helton, and Prince were heat winners.
