BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (May 6) - It was "money-time" Saturday night at Brownstown Speedway as it was People's Bank "Night at the Races." Feature race action saw Jim Curry of Norman, Ind., pick up his first win of 2000 and the 103rd win of his career at Brownstown in the Late Model feature, while defending Bomber track champion Sam Chastain of Mitchell, Ind., won the Bomber feature, with young John DeMoss of Bloomington, Ind., taking top honors in the UMP Modified main event.

The start of the Late Model feature saw Mark Barber take the lead from his outside front row starting spot, trailed by Steven Godsey, fast qualifier Randy Petro, C.J. Rayburn, and Cale Kern. On lap 2, Godsey would assume the point, while Dan Sturgeon would grab fifth from Kern. Petro and Rayburn began a side-by-side duel for third that saw the duo trade the spot several times until Rayburn took the spot on lap 6. One lap later, Rayburn and Petro would pass Mark Barber, who had broken the left-front tie-rod on his mount, but continued to run strong.

Meanwhile, Curry was beginning to mount his charge to the front after starting in the tenth spot, breaking into the top five on lap 8. Up front, Godsey now had Rayburn on his bumper as the lead cars began to catch slower traffic, while Curry took fourth on lap 12 and snatched third away from Petro on lap 13. Godsey and Rayburn began to duel for the lead at this point, with "Bud" taking the lead on lap 14, only to lose the lead back to Godsey one lap later.

This duo continued to battle for the lead, with Rayburn going to the point once again on lap 18, as Curry would grab second from Godsey one lap later. The only caution of the event would wave with 19 laps completed for a Mark Bechelli spin in turn three. While under caution, leader Rayburn's left-rear tire would go flat, but Rayburn elected to stay on the track. On the restart, the deflated tire would bite the leader as it gave up on the backstretch, sending Rayburn pitside and handing the lead over to Curry who would drive to victory in his T.J.'s Bar and Grill, Curry Farms, HP Engines, Dyer Billet Rods #7 C.J. Rayburn race car.

Petro would scoot by Godsey with two laps remaining to claim the runner-up spot, with Brett Davis and Cale Kern having season best runs at Brownstown to complete the top five. Illinois invader Rob Toland had his best ever finish at Brownstown with a sixth place effort, with Sturgeon, Barber, Todd McKinney, and Frankie Coomer completing the top ten.

The 15 lap Bomber feature saw Matt Cummings grab the lead early on in the event and hold the point until the waning stages of the race when slower traffic enabled Sam Chastain to grab the lead and hold off the charges of Cummings and Robert Walters to grab his first win of the 2000 season. Chastain's Bedford Police DARE Program, Briscoe's Mobile Homes, Terry Cummings Race Engines #57x was chased to the checkered flag by Walters and Cummings. Ray Godsey, Jr. and Bubba Woods would finish fourth and fifth. Willie Sallee, Matt Bex, John Phelps, Darrell Burton, and Roger Reichenbacker would complete the top ten.

The UMP Modified feature would see John DeMoss grad the lead away from Randy Petro on lap 13 of the 20 lap main event and DeMoss would stave off the challenges of Petro to capture his first Y2K win at Brownstown behind the wheel of his Erwin's Drywall, Southern Indiana Drywall Supply, Kadex Drywall #79D Ellis Race Car. Darren Davis would finish a strong third, with points leader Matt Boknecht and Lee Hobbs completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Adam Sasser, Earl Plessinger, Joe Godsey, Todd Gilpin, and Nelson Gingery.

Saturday night, May 13, will be Papa John's Pizza "Night at the Races" and will feature Late Models, Indiana Super Stocks, Bombers, and a visit by the always exciting UMRA Midgets.
