Godsey, Deckard, Fields, Bennett Win

By: Chris Nunn

The first race of the 2010 Indiana Late Model Series season saw Eric Varner and Jeremy Hines make up the front row of the 25 lap affair. Hines took the lead at the green flag and led lap one ahead of Varner and Zak Blackwood. Behind them a three wide battle for fourth was shaping up between Steve Godsey, Zane Powell, and Mark Barber. The caution flew on lap two, as John Mulligan and Steve Davis spun in turn two. On the restart, Blackwood moved around Varner for the second spot and brought Barber with him to third. Varner then lost the fourth position to Godsey, as he moved around him on lap five. By this time Hines had opened up a half straight lead over Blackwood. A battle for fifth began to take shape between Shannon Reed and Powell on lap eight, with Reed holding the position. Hines began to work lapped traffic on lap nine, as Barber and Blackwood battled for second. The yellow flag slowed the field on lap nine, as John Gilstrap spun in turn one. The yellow flew on the restart as Shannon Allen and Greg Kendall spun in turn one. When the green flag flew, Godsey, Barber, and Blackwood ran three wide for second. Blackwood held the position, with Godsey taking third. Behind them, Kevin Hardin moved into fifth, getting around Shannon Reed. The caution flew once again on lap 13 as Powell and Varner piled up in turn one. On the restart the yellow flew once again as John Mulligan spun on the frontstretch. The lap 13 restart was once again nullified as a four car pileup ensued in turn two. Godsey moved around Blackwood on the restart for second and began to set his sights on Hines for the lead. The two battled side by side as they clicked off lap 16. Godsey was able to move around Hines for the lead coming out of turn two. With five laps to go Godsey held a three car length advantage over Hines, with Blackwood two car lengths behind Hines. Hines began to show some smoke from behind his car and began to drop fluid on the race track as he closed in on Godsey. Blackwood then moved in to make it a three car battle for the lead with one to go. Coming into turn three, Hines made a last ditch effort and was able to beat out Godsey to the line by mere inches for the win. With two laps to go, Hines was told over the raceciever radio to pull into the infield due to the fluid being dropped from his machine. So with Hines black flagged the win was given to Godsey. Completing the top five were Blackwood, Hardin, Alan Magner, and Edgar Godsey.

Jay Deckard and Lee Hobbs led the UMP Super Stock feature field to the green, with Deckard leading lap one. Hobbs closed in on Deckard for a split second but was not able to make the pass for the lead. Tim Clark moved around Jeremy Wilson to take third on lap four, and began to close in on Hobbs for third. The top three cars had pulled out to over a half straight lead over Wilson in fourth. Wilson then lost fourth to Jeremy Hines, who moved around him on lap nine. At the halfway mark it was Deckard, Hobbs, Clark, Hines, and Wilson making up the top five. The top three ran nose to tail, as they completed lap 11. Behind them, Brad Cummings moved into the top five, getting around Wilson. With five to go, the top three remained the same with only three car lengths separating the three. Contact was made between Hobbs and Clark, allowing Deckard to pull out to an eight car advantage. With two to go, Deckard put the lapped car of David Brewer between he and Hobbs to cushion his lead. Deckard was able to cruise to the win over Hobbs, Clark, Hines, and Cummings.

The 20 lap Bomber main event saw Keaton Streeval and Aaron Fields make up the front row with Streeval leading lap one. A three wide battle for third took shape with Bubba Woods, Josh Turner, and Nathan Baker. The caution flew on lap three, as Steven Watson stalled on the backstretch. When racing resumed, Fields moved under Streeval to battle for the lead, bringing Turner with him. Fields took the lead, with Turner moving around Streeval for second. The caution flew on lap seven for Jake Sabens, who had spun in turn one. On the restart, Baker moved up to battle Turner for second. Baker took the spot as they completed lap eight. Woods, Streeval, Baker, and Turner all waged a war for second at the halfway mark. Baker, Turner, and Woods then battled three wide for the second spot on lap 11. The caution flag would slow the proceedings on lap 12, as Brent Lee and Ronnie Pardue spun in turn four. On the restart, Fields once again shot out to the lead, with Baker and Turner battling for second. The caution flew on lap 13, as Sabens spun in turn four. When the green flew again, Fields and Turner ran first and second about a car length separating the two. Behind them Woods and Baker ran door to door for third. Woods cleared baker with two laps to go to take third. Up front, no one was able to catch Fields as he took the checkers ahead of Turner, Woods, Baker, and Streeval.

Curt Bennett and Tim Roberts made up the front row of the UMP Pure Stock feature. Bennett led lap one with Cody Vanosdol taking second from Roberts. Roberts fought back under Vanosdol, as Mickey Hines made it a three way for second. Hines moved around both of them for second, leaving Roberts and Vanosdol to battle for third. Vanosdol was able to hold third, putting Roberts back to fourth. At the halfway mark, it was Bennett leading Hines, Vanosdol, Roberts, and Brad Kemp. On lap 12, Roberts used lapped traffic to his advantage to move around Vanosdol for third. Back up front, Bennett had put two lapped cars between he and Hines to pad his lead. The yellow flew for the first time on lap 16, as Hines was taken out coming out of turn four. Officials deemed he was taken out by a lapped car and was able to get his spot back in second. When racing resumed, Bennett took the field to the green with Roberts and Hines battling for second. With two to go, Bennett led a three wide battle for second to the white flag. Roberts took second at the white flag. Bennett, however, was able to take the win over Roberts, Vanosdol, Hines, and Brian Ballard.
